Lab 1: MINERAL IDENTIFICATION

1.	Read assigned pages in text and lab manual (see the first page of this manual for
	reading assingments).

2.	Identify the 21 minerals within the first one and a half lab periods. You will have
a combination mineral and rock identification quiz at the beginning of the lab
period on the week of October 18.

3.	Procedure:

	a)	Work in groups of 4 to 5 people on the mineral sets (there are six
complete sets). You may work together, but learn to identify the
minerals on your own so you will be prepared for the quiz.

	b)	On the sheets provided, write down the sample-box number and record the
physical properties of the mineral in each box. Use the lab manual to key
out the minerals. Refer to the text Appendix C on pp, 538-544, and
Chapter 2, pp. 57-65 for additional help.

	c)	Write down each mineral name and its chemical composition and mineral
group using the references provided (lab manual, text). Record all
pertinent information on the mineral identification sheets.,

4.	Your TA will inform you how to have your results checked.

5.	Please replace all minerals in the correct sample boxes and mineral set boxes.
Also be careful not to lose or misplace lab materials, streak plates, glass plates,
magnets, etc. Everyone has to use the same materials so help out your classmates.
