Experience
1997-presentGraduate Student Researcher, UCSC
Spearheading development of applied geological remote sensing project in Long Valley Caldera, CA within the Earth Sciences Department. Research has included field work in Long Valley, Monterey Bay, Hawai'i, Yaquina Bay, and Fiji. I have conducted field acquistions of spectral data with portable spectroradiometers, as well as planned three separate airborne remote sensing acquistions in the Long Valley region in June, 1998, September, 1999, and September, 2000. Analysis of data has/is been done with ENVI, ERMapper, and ERDAS Imagine on SUN Sparc, PC, and MAC platforms. I have also been instrumental in the development of another remote sensing project within the Biology and Ocean Sciences Departments.
Winter 2002Instructor for Remote Sensing and GIS in the Earth Sciences, UCSC
Fall 2000Teaching Assistant for California Geology, UCSC
Instructed ~15 students in an introductory level geology laboratory that focused on Californian geological provinces. Material taught included basic structure, petrology, map reading, volcanology, seismology, and sedimentology. Assisted in all phases of grading and review, including construction of labs and weekly quizzes.
Summer 1999Teaching Assistant in Geological Field Camp, UCSC
Instructed ~20 students for an intensive four week course in geological field methods taught in the Eastern Sierra. Instruction was conducted from a base camp with field work during the day and extensive "office" work at night in camp. Material taught included all phases of geological map creation, cross section and strat column creation, as well as report writing. Assisted in all phases of grading and review.
Spring 1999,
Fall 1997
Teaching Assistant in Geological Field Methods, UCSC
Instructed ~20 students in field methods both in a laboratory atmosphere and in five field exercises. Rewrote several existing labs to facilitate increased student comprehension. Material taught included basic geology as well as structural, sedimentological, and basic geophysical concepts. Map, strat column, and cross section creation are emphasized. Assisted in all phases of grading and evaluation.
1994-1997Laboratory Technician in the Paleomagnetics Lab, University of Arizona, Tucson
Involved in all phases of paleomagnetic research with Dr. Robert Butler. I collected samples with Dr. Butler both in Arizona and in British Columbia and conducted core sample preparation on these samples. Analysis of these samples was carried out via thermal demagnetization procedures and measurements made with a magnetometer. My last year included analysis of the data and a poster presentation of the results at the yearly departmental colloquium.
Summer 1995Internship in the Geochronology Lab, Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska, Fairbanks
One of twenty interns chosen for undergraduate research opportunities in the Geophysical Institute. Worked on a research project with Dr. Paul Layer that involved Ar-Ar age dating of very young volcanics from the Aleutian volcano Aniakchak. Work included the use of a laser fusion mass spectrometer. Research culminated in a talk and paper for the Institute.
1992-1993Internship in the Nuclear Fuels Division of Siemens Power Corporation, Richland, WA
Carried out adminstrative duties in the Fuel Design department including extensive desktop publishing and data entry of both adminstrative documents and of scientific data. Developed valuable interpersonal skills while working with over forty engineers and other administrative personnel within the department.
