HYDROGEOLOGY FACILITIES

Hydrogeology research facilities includes numerous dedicated and shared labs for field, laboratory, and computational research and general student use. There are two computer labs containing Sun, PC, and Mac workstations, portable (field) computers, printers (black and white and color), a large-format plotter, scanners, and other devices and associated software. Hydrogeology student researchers (both graduate and undergraduate) use these machines and software for a variety of research projects and coursework.

We have storage and staging space used to hold instruments, equipment, and supplies and to prepare for short- and long-term field and lab experiments. Instrumentation and supplies include: digital borehole logging equipment (cable, generator, winch, and sondes), rain and stream gauges, well level tapes and pressure transducers/loggers, pumps, infiltromers, lysimeters, tensiometers, waders, boots, current meters, and fluid samplers. We also have lab space dedicated to sediment analysis, including instruments for geotechnical and hydrologic testing of core samples.

We have outstanding analytical facilities available throughout the Earth & Planetary Sciences and Ocean Sciences departments, the Institute of Marine Sciences (including a staffed wet chemistry lab with an ion chromatograph, fluorometer, flow-injection analyzer, flame AA, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and other instruments), and the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics. In addition, we collaborate with colleagues at numerous other institutions who have specialized labs for isotopic and other analyses of sediment, rock, and water samples.

More information can be found at Andy Fisher's Hydrogeology web site: http://es.ucsc.edu/~afisher.
